Spelman College is a historically black, liberal arts college for women, located in Atlanta, Georgia. It was founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary by Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles, two missionaries from New England. The school was initially established to provide educational opportunities for African American women who were largely excluded from higher education at the time.
In 1924, the institution changed its name to Spelman College in honor of Laura Spelman Rockefeller and her parents, who were early benefactors of the school. Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium, which is a group of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) that includes Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morehouse School of Medicine.
